I guess I'll get this started

Postby mau.bustamante » Wed Feb 15, 2012 3:42 am

For the first time ever, I've been able to finish the type racer practice mode without being demoted for running out of time. The score at the end was 25WPM to type an excerpt from Terminator 2. :D Interestingly enough, Terminator isn't defined in our dictionary, so I had to finger spell it.The results indicated that my accuracy was only twenty eight%, but I wonder if that's just because steno sometimes starts out as gibberish.

side note: I hate typing numbers

OMG, I tried again just to see if I could improve my speed on a different passage. This time I got a much easier part of The Princess Bride and did it at 35WPM. And now that I see thirty six% accuracy, I know for sure those numbers are incorrect.

I think Typeracer counts our accuracy against us even if we don't write anything wrong, because incomplete translations of multi-stroke words count against us even if they're then deleted and the correct word is then sent.

Quick update: Today, for the first time, I pulled off a score of 60 WPM on TypeRacer. The passage was pretty short, and this is definitely an isolated event, but I'm pleased with my progress. :)
More consistently, I'm hovering around the 40 WPM mark, with occasional dips into the 30's and rarely 20's on the more difficult passages. IM'ing has progressively become easier and more manageable.
Gotta keep on keeping on.

Follow-up on the previous post... I just typed a section of Johnny Cash's "I Walk the Line" at 69 WPM. Very nice.

Nice! Yeah, slow songs were some of the first things I was able to steno perfectly, and it was incredibly satisfying to be able to get every word in the right rhythm. I also recommend nature and science TV shows. Carl Sagan's probably the best for early steno speeds, because he talks... so... slowly...

It seems I've been providing updates close to monthly.

I'm proud to report this time around that my typeracer speed has increased to 83 WPM! Out of about four are five runs, that was the best, while the other ones (ones with more unusual words) tend to drop to around 50-60 WPM.

Hi guys

After many months of silence, I decided it was time to get back into the Plover world.
I've kept practicing on and off in the last year and while my speed hasn't increased dramatically, at least I'm getting way more consistent. I hardly ever look up word briefs anymore. I tried doing a couple of races on typeracer today and my average speed lies around the 50-70WPM range (the peak was 96). I'm pretty happy with that speed because it meets my day-to-day needs, not being a CART provider or court reporter ;) Also, at that speed my thought processes are often the limiting factor, rather than the computer input speed.

Plover on, my friends!
